Luxury construction company GRAYA has purchased an exclusive beachfront residence in Byron Bay for an undisclosed amount. Brothers and founders of the business, Andrew and Rob Gray, nabbed the property after being cold-called by Christie's International Real Estate Australia agent, Sean Cussell.
Located at 6 Border St, Byron Bay, the 2022m2 block features 40 metres of absolute beach frontage. Referred to as a 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity in the listing, the residence offers a one bedroom home with a generous expanse of green grass leading down to the sand with views of the Bay, Julian Rocks, Main Beach and Wategos, and the Cape Byron Lighthouse.
Ideally located, the home is just a quick 10-minute beachfront walk to local cafes, shops, restaurants and the thriving heart of Byron Bay.
GRAYA recently made headlines after its Gold Coast property Dune - home to managing director Rob and his wife Meghan - was sold for $11 million to fitness influencer Adam Sullivan.
This significant purchase marks GRAYA's first venture out of Queensland and into the New South Wales market. Of the acquisition, Rob said that the decision to move into the Byron market made sense as the town felt like a Queensland city.
"We expanded into the Gold Coast about two years ago and that's been a really successful venture," said Rob. "So we thought why not continue our expansion and we really like what Byron Bay has to offer."
Despite being sceptical during the initial phone call with Cussell, Rob says that he quickly realised they were potentially about to purchase "one of the best homes in Australia."
"We've analysed beachfront property from the Sunshine Coast through to the Gold Coast and looked at how quickly these beachfront prices are skyrocketing," said Rob. "We thought if we didn't do it now then it would only get more expensive and more out of reach."
Previously owned by Byron Bay local resident Adam Garrisson, the site currently features a one bedroom home with plans for redevelopment. After purchasing the property a decade ago, Garrisson said living in the home was "amazing".
"Waking up to the view of the Lighthouse from my bed, with the occasional sight of whales and dolphins, is truly special and soothing," said Garrisson.
Since securing the residence, the brothers have renamed it Waterlily and intend to develop it into a personal family holiday destination. While there are no current plans, Rob and Andrew intend to work with locals to bring the residence to life.
"We're in the early stages of talking to local consultants because we want to use people who know the area really well and are respected in the area," said Rob. "That's key for us."
While the build is not due to start until 2026, Rob said he'd already been thinking about the aesthetic of the home and planned to use the location as inspiration.
"It's a beachfront opportunity so we want to make sure we play up that aspect of it," said Rob. "We're going to make sure it transports you out of the city and it feels very beachy and natural."
"We want to match the Byron style, that's for sure."
