Does that house look strangely familiar? Chances are you might have seen it on the big - or small - screen in the past year or two.

With an increasing number of film productions moving at least some shooting to Australia in recent years, either to escape COVID-19 or chase lucrative financial incentives, a number of Australian properties have enjoyed a film debut.

We've compiled a list of some of these properties that could double as summer viewing inspiration if you haven't yet seen them on screen. If you want to get even closer to the action, many of them are even available to rent as a holiday house.

Dovecote, Gerringong

Viewers of the hit 2020 film The Invisible Man will be familiar with the exterior of The Headland building at Dovecote, an impressive property set on 150 acres of farmland in the NSW Coast Town of Gerringong.

A crew of around 40 people took over the property for a week of filming in 2019, Dovecote's property and business manager Kathryn Durham previously told The Illawarra Mercury.

The science fiction film (available for streaming on Netflix and Binge) was inspired by the novel of the same name, penned by H.G. Wells, and follows a woman who believes she is being stalked by her ex-boyfriend.

When not being used as a film set, Dovecote is available for rent as holiday accommodation, with rates starting at $1150 per night.

Pebble Cove Farm, Kiama

Interior scenes from The Invisible Man were shot at Pebble Cove Farm (which is near to Dovecote), but the property has more recently been used as a location for Russell Crowe's 2022 film Poker Face.

The property, with Philip Thalis-designed home, last sold in September 2015 for $7.3 million and is privately owned.

Poker Face will star Liam Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky alongside Crowe and is set to debut in 2022.

It follows the story of a tech-billionaire, played by Crowe, who invites friends to his estate with ulterior motives in mind.

Soma, Byron Bay

Byron Bay is no stranger to a celebrity appearance, but nine high-profile celebs in the one resort is probably on the extreme end of things.

That's just what happened when the cast of Nine Perfect Strangers took over the Soma wellness retreat for filming in 2020.

Based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, the mini-series (streaming on Amazon) tells the story of nine strangers who book in for a 10-day retreat at Tranquillum House, run by guru Masha Dmitrichenko (played by Nicole Kidman).

You can stay at Soma too, with the property available for rent $8500 a night - though it's already booked out for most of 2022.

The Black Chapel, Austinmer

It's no silver screen icon, but Married at First Sight certainly has its legions of followers in Australia.

The TV series - wherein couples are married first and get to know one another later - has been filmed at a variety of locations, including this guest house in the Wollongong suburb of Austinmer.

Known as the Black Chapel, the property consists of a renovated miners cottage - nearly a century old - and a new guesthouse.

It's currently listed for sale with McGrath Thirroul.

The Steading/The Quarters, Bobundara

Continuing the small screen theme, this property in Bobundara, in the NSW Snowy Mountains, was used in the Seven Network series SAS Australia.

Celebrities featured on the first season, which premiered in 2020, included former Bali inmate Schapelle Corby, one-time Bachelorette star Ali Oetjen and rugby union player Nick 'Honey Badger' Cummins.

It's currently available for rent on Airbnb and consists of The Steading, an historic stone building, and the Quarters - a corrugated iron building.
