Balgownie

An established northern suburb

An established northern suburb of Wollongong with properties that have good resale and rental value. Balgownie is located to the north west of central Wollongong, in the foothills of the Illawarra escarpment. Cabbage Tree Creek (Towel Creek) runs through the centre of the suburb. The area has a population of about 5527 according to the latest government census. Usually included with Tarrawanna and Fernhill, the population of Balgownie then increases to 9161 residents. The average age of residents ranges from 40 to 59 years so a slightly older demographic than neighbouring suburbs. The original inhabitants and custodians are the Dharawal people but when first settled in the 19th century by immigrants, it became the centre of coal mining, farming and logging. Thought to be named after the Scottish town of Balgownie although it could have been named after the bridge over the River Don in Aberdeen, Scotland. Balgownie is mainly residential with only the steeper escarpment land not developed. There is a public school, a historic Balgownie Hotel, restaurants and the village has shops for basic amenities.
