Inner West Council is a local government area in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, formed on 12 May 2016 from the merger of Ashfield, Leichhardt, and Marrickville councils. The council covers an area of 35 square kilometres and had an estimated population of 182,818 as of the 2021 census. The Inner West region is located in the eastern part of Sydney. In the early 2010s, the New South Wales Government considered merging several local government areas in Sydney to create larger councils. The Independent Local Government Review Panel initially proposed merging six inner west councils into a single council.
