It was created on 1 July 1979 from the amalgamation of the Municipality of Inverell with Ashford Shire and Macintyre Shire. The shire includes the town of Inverell and small towns and villages such as Gilgai, Stannifer, Elsmore, Bukkulla, Ashford, Bonshaw, Yetman, Wallangra, Graman, Oakwood, Delungra, Mount Russell, and Tingha. Formerly part of the Armidale Region, Tingha was transferred to the Inverell Shire on 1 July 2019. The area is adjacent to the Macintyre River and the Gwydir Highway. Inverell council area's economy is driven by agriculture, forestry, and fishing, followed by construction and real estate services. The majority of households have manageable mortgage repayments, while a significant portion spend more than 30% of income on rent. The population is predominantly older, with a diverse family composition including childless couples and single parents.
