An affordable city in the popular Northern Rivers region

The laid-back city of Lismore in the Northern Rivers area of NSW is known for being the dynamic and creative hub of the region.

About 730 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD, Lismore city is bounded by Tweed Shire in the north, Byron Shire and Ballina Shire in the east, the Richmond Valley Council area in the south and south-east, and the Kyogle Council area in the north-west.

The historic town has an eclectic mix of quirky, cosmopolitan shops and an array of dining options that offer outstanding food and it also has some super pubs.

The Northern Rivers is renowned as one of Australia’s largest coffee-growing centres and it is also the home of the macadamia - with many of these farms not far from the Lismore city centre.

The area is famous for its gourmet cuisine, with worldwide exports of avocados, tropical and stone fruits, blueberries, pecans, herbs and organic produce, finger limes, goats cheeses and lemon myrtle along with beef, pork and dairy. Much of this produce can be purchased at local markets.

With its close proximity to the Byron Shire, the more affordable city of Lismore and the surrounding areas have become a popular place to live and work and for people making a “tree change”.

It’s also a centre of sport, with dozens of sporting facilities bursting with activity each weekend as well as special events, national and international fixtures and an amazing variety of sports.

The city has an excellent reputation for quality education with a range of both public and independent schooling options and it is home to the popular Southern Cross University Lismore campus.

Lismore is serviced by major rail links and the city has an airport with flights to and from Sydney.
