Liston
WAKE up to the scent of lavender wafting from the nearby farm, and the gentle mooing of cattle in the laid back town of Liston
Once a thriving silver-and-tin mining town, Liston is now a hamlet straddling the Mount Lindesay Highway, which once formed part of the transport link between Brisbane and Tenterfield. Liston is about a 20-minute drive from Stanthorpe in Queensland.
This tiny township is nestled among undulating, lush land and has good rainfall.
The Aloomba Lavender farm, on Mount Lindesay Road, grows European lavender and is a tourist attraction, bringing in coach loads of visitors.
Homes in Liston are rustic; potable water is from rain tanks, there are septic toilets and firewood is used for fuel.
Liston Post Office closed in the 1970s and residents drive to Stanthorpe for shopping and other essential services.
Relics from a bustling past remain dotted in the town, including the old settlers’ cemetery at Wilson’s Downfall and the Rivertree Chimney.
Liston is part of the Granite Belt, where stoned fruit is grown. The town is also close to several national parks, including Boonoo Boonoo, Girraween and Main Range National Park and the Bald Rock, a granite outcrop stretching 200 metres high which offer views across the whole region.
There are up to 40 wineries in the region. Liston residents look forward to the Rivertree Trail Ride, held annually next to the town and attracting riders as far afield as Evans Head. The next ride is scheduled for November, although check dates closer to the time.
