Darwin City

Hip, hot and humid - how many describe Darwin

This ex-frontier outpost has a casual atmosphere to suit its climate, with many of its 132,000 residents getting around in shorts and a T-shirt year-round. As Australia’s northernmost capital city, Darwin is also closest to Asia, with flights to Bali taking just under two hours. It’s this proximity to Asia that makes Darwin one of Australia’s most multicultural cities, with more than 100 nationalities. International cuisine can be had at most of Darwin’s many restaurants and markets, including the Mindil Beach sunset market. Darwin is also the gateway to the world heritage listed Kakadu National Park, home to Aboriginal rock paintings. Darwiners pride themselves on Aboriginal heritage featured in a number of Aboriginal art galleries, such as the Gallery of the Northern Territory. Nearby and commanding Darwin’s administrative centre is Parliament House, built in 1994 and the nation’s newest parliamentary building. The city is characterised by wide streets and tropical parks, and having withstood the most powerful cyclone since white settlement (Cyclone Tracy in 1974), residents like to think they can survive anything, and indeed thrive, in this young, vibrant city.
