Wagait Council

The Wagait Shire is a local government area in the Northern Territory of Australia, established as the Cox Peninsula Community Government Council in 1995 and renamed in 2008. It is located west of Darwin, accessible by a 15-minute ferry ride or a 138 km drive on sealed roads. The council's previous name was derived from the Cox Peninsula, named after Matthew Dillon Cox, the Northern Territory's first pastoralist. Cox applied for a lease over the peninsula in 1869, shortly after Darwin was established. The Wagait council area has a varied family structure, with a significant number of childless couples and couples with children. The workforce is primarily composed of professionals, managers, and technicians. The population skews towards older age groups, with over half above 50. The top industries include professional services, real estate, and construction.
