Cocos Islands Council

The Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is responsible for managing local affairs on the Australian external territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The Shire covers an area of 14.1 km2 in the Indian Ocean, located about 2,770 km north-west of Perth and 1,000 km south-west of Java in Indonesia. The islands were owned by the Clunies-Ross family from the 19th century onwards, and were granted to them in perpetuity by Queen Victoria in 1886. The Shire is administered by the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities and an Administrator. The current shire president is Aindil Minkom, who was elected in October 2019. Cocos Islands has a varied family composition, with couples with children being the most common. The majority of dwellings are rented, while a small percentage own outright. The main occupations include labourers, technicians, and managers. Personal income distribution shows a significant portion earning between $0 to $52k annually.
