Kangaroo Island, also known as Karta Pintingga, is Australia's third-largest island located in South Australia, 112 km southwest of Adelaide. The island was once inhabited by Aboriginal Australians known as the Kartan people, who disappeared from the archaeological record around 10,000 years ago when rising sea levels turned the land into an island. Kangaroo Island was settled by sealers and whalers in the early 19th century, and permanently from 1836 during British colonisation of South Australia. Its closest point to the mainland is Snapper Point in Backstairs Passage, 13.5 km from the Fleurieu Peninsula. Kangaroo Island's economy thrives on agriculture, forestry, and fishing, while a large proportion of residents own their homes outright. The population skews towards older age groups, with a majority aged above 50. Mortgage affordability is favorable, with a high percentage of households having repayments below 30% of income.
