The Shire of Gingin was originally established as the Gingin Road District on 12 January 1893. The township of Gingin separated as the Municipality of Gingin just 11 days later, but later merged back into the road district in 1903. On 1 July 1961, it became a shire under the Local Government Act 1960, which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. The Shire of Gingin covers an area of 3,211 square kilometres (1,240 sq mi) and its seat of government is the town of Gingin, located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia just beyond the northern fringe of the Perth metropolitan area. In Gingin, a considerable percentage of residents own their homes outright, while others are purchasers or renters. The council area is characterized by a mix of occupations, with labourers, managers, and technicians being prominent. Additionally, the area's population is skewed towards older age groups, with a majority above 50 years old.
