Mount Magnet is a historic gold mining town located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. The town is known for being the longest surviving gold mining settlement in the state. The area was originally named West Mount Magnet by explorer Robert Austin in 1854. The townsite is situated near a prominent hill with high iron content, affecting compass readings. In 1972, the Aboriginal name 'Warramboo,' meaning campfire camping place, was reinstated for West Mount Magnet by the Surveyor General.
The population of Mount Magnet is characterized by a significant percentage of residents above 50 years old. The majority of households have mortgage and rent payments that are considered affordable. The predominant occupation in the area is machinery operators and drivers, reflecting the local economy's focus on industries such as construction and agriculture.
