The Shire of Mount Marshall is located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 80 kilometres north-northwest of Merredin and 300 kilometres northeast of Perth. Covering an area of 10,190 square kilometres, the town of Bencubbin serves as the seat of government for the Shire. The region was first explored by Surveyor General John Septimus Roe, with Mount Marshall and Lake McDermott named after early settler Marshall McDermott. Initially settled by sandalwood collectors and graziers in 1868, the area was known for sandalwood removal from the 1880s to the 1920s.
The Mount Marshall council area has a demographic skew towards older residents, with a strong presence in agriculture and real estate industries. The majority of households have manageable mortgage repayments. The area also has a trend towards managerial occupations and a mix of family compositions.
