The Shire of Nannup is located in the South West region of Western Australia, approximately 280 kilometres south of Perth and 60 kilometres southeast of Busselton. The town of Nannup serves as the seat of government and is where about half of the Shire's population resides. The Shire covers a land area of 2,935 square kilometres, with the majority of it being covered in hardwood forests. The southern coastline of the Shire is mostly within the D'Entrecasteaux National Park. The area was originally established as the Lower Blackwood Road District in 1890 before being renamed the Nannup Road District in 1925.
