Sandstone Council

The Shire of Sandstone is located in the eastern Mid West region of Western Australia, approximately 740 kilometres northeast of Perth. Covering an area of 32,882 square kilometres, the town of Sandstone serves as the seat of government for the Shire. Gold was discovered in the area in the late 1800s, leading to a significant increase in population. Originally known as the Black Range Road District, the area was renamed Sandstone and became a Shire Council in 1961 following changes to the Local Government Act. Currently, the Shire of Sandstone is not divided into wards, with six councillors serving at large. Sandstone council area has a mix of age groups, with a high percentage of residents aged above 50. The majority of residents own their homes outright or have other tenure types. The top industries in the area include agriculture, forestry, fishing, construction, and manufacturing.
