The Shire of Upper Gascoyne is located in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia, inland from Carnarvon. It covers an area of 57,939 square kilometres, with much of it being uninhabited or sparsely vegetated sheep station country. The seat of government for the Shire is the small town of Gascoyne Junction. According to the 2021 census, the Shire has a population of 170, with 56% identifying as Aboriginal. The Upper Gascoyne Road District was established on 10 February 1887 and later became a Shire on 1 July 1961 under the Local Government Act 1960.
The council area of Upper Gascoyne has a majority of households with rent payments below 30% of income. The occupation profile is varied, with a notable presence of managers and professionals. The population distribution skews towards older age groups, particularly those above 50 years.
