The Shire of Wagin is located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 230 kilometres southeast of Perth. Covering an area of about 1,948 square kilometres, the seat of government for the Shire is the town of Wagin. The area was first established as the Arthur Road District in 1887, later renamed Wagin Road District in 1905. The Wagin township was initially separated from the road district in 1906 but was amalgamated back in 1961. The Shire of Wagin was officially declared a shire on 1 July 1961 following the passage of the Local Government Act 1960.
