The Shire of Wandering is located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia and has a population of 444 as of the 2016 census, making it one of the smallest LGAs in the country. It covers an area of 1,901 square kilometres to the east of Albany Highway, about 120 kilometres south-east of Perth. The town of Wandering serves as the seat of government for the Shire. The Wandering Road District was established on 6 October 1874 and became a shire on 1 July 1961 under the Local Government Act 1960. The Shire of Wandering is undivided and is represented by seven councillors.
