The Shire of West Arthur is located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, about 200 kilometres south-east of Perth. Covering an area of 2,834 square kilometres, the Shire's seat of government is in the town of Darkan. The economy of the Shire is primarily driven by industries such as wool, sheep, timber, grain, forestry, beef, pigs, cattle hide tanning, engineering, and earthmoving, contributing approximately $45 million per year to the State's economy. The area was originally established as the West Arthur Road District in 1896 and later became the Shire of West Arthur in 1961 under the Local Government Act 1960.
