The Shire of Wongan-Ballidu is located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 180 kilometres north-northeast of Perth. Covering an area of 3,369 square kilometres, the shire's administrative center is the town of Wongan Hills. The shire was originally established as the Melbourne Road District on 10 February 1887, before being renamed the Wongan-Ballidu Road District on 18 June 1926. The shire includes the Wongan Hills, which is the namesake of the town within its boundaries.
