The Shire of Woodanilling is located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, approximately 30 kilometres south of Wagin and 260 kilometres south-southeast of Perth. Covering an area of 1,129 square kilometres, the seat of government for the Shire is the town of Woodanilling. The Shire was originally established as the Woodanilling Road District on 2 February 1906, and later became a Shire on 1 July 1961 under the Local Government Act 1960. The Shire is divided into three wards: Central Ward with 2 councillors, West Ward with 3 councillors, and East Ward with 2 councillors. As of 2023, there are 224 heritage-listed places in the Shire of Woodanilling, including the Carrolup Aboriginal Cemetery in Marribank.
