The Shire of Yilgarn is located in the eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately 400 kilometres east of Perth. Covering an area of 30,720 square kilometres, the Shire's seat of government is the town of Southern Cross. The main industries in the area are mining and farming. The Yilgarn Road District was established on December 24, 1891, and later became a shire on July 1, 1961, under the Local Government Act 1960. Southern Cross was initially separated as the Municipality of Southern Cross in 1892 but was re-absorbed into the road district in 1918.
