Popular with beach-goers, artists, celebrities, visitors and even tertiary students, this is one of Australia's most famous locations.
"A mecca of sand, sun and serenity" according to Tourism Australia, this "beach town is a coastal paradise".
As for who lives here, we have everyone from wealthy folk in coastal mansions elevating the median house price into the millions, to backpackers renting cheap shared accommodation.
The 2016 Census said the largest sectors of workers are professionals (25 percent), managers (16 percent), technicians and trades (13 percent), community and personal service (13 percent) and sales (10 percent). The largest industries are accommodation and cafes, but they only employ 7 and 6 percent of local workers respectively so the opportunities are diverse.
The permanent population is still below 10,000, the average age is 41, and there are both public and private schools available locally.
Travelling in and around the region is easy too. There are multiple bus and shuttle services in and out of town, and it's only just off the Pacific Motorway taking people between Sydney and Brisbane.
