The shire is situated next to the Coral Sea, approximately 50 kilometres south of the Queensland border. Administered from Mullumbimby, the shire covers an area of 566.7 square kilometres and has been a local government entity since 1906. It was named after Cape Byron, which was named by Captain James Cook in 1770 in honour of Vice-Admiral John Byron.
