Gateway suburb Capalaba offers city living with a weekender lifestyle as the traditional shopping and business hub of Redland City.
The suburb appeals to working families who want ease of access to the city, while benefiting from a diverse range of recreational, cultural and community attractions.
Capalaba offers properties in varying sizes from acreage blocks to million dollar homes to units, along with a family friendly lifestyle just 10 minutes from the water.
Capalaba offers the best of both worlds - close to the city and everything you need, with homes placed among the bushland and residential streets.
Family life is good in Capalaba with the regional park, a sprawling 14 hectares of open play areas for kids, with an all-abilities playground including flying fox and timber fort, walking and cycling circuits, and community facilities, as well as an abundance of sporting and leisure activities.
Capalaba is also home to the Visitor Information Centre and the Redlands IndigiScapes Centre which is dedicated to native plants and wildlife.
The name of Capalaba is believed to be derived from the Indigenous Yugarabul word for the ringtail possum, a marsupial native to the area European settlement began in the 1850's, led by farmers, lumberjacks, and sawmill operators. The town became important in the overland trade link between the settlements of Brisbane and Cleveland. Crossings and bridges over Tingalpa Creek were established to facilitate such transport.
The town was originally officially known as Tingalpa, presumably taking its name from the creek, this caused confusion due to the existence of another area of the same name and so in 1927 the town's name was officially changed to Capalaba (a name in common use).
Capalaba has large shopping and commercial centres with two malls and a major bus station, as well as light industrial zones surrounded by bushland and residential streets, making it the second most populous suburb in the Redlands.
Surrounding suburbs include Alexandra Hills, Birkdale, and Sheldon, also in Redland City, along with Burbank and Chandler (and formerly Capalaba West), which lie within Brisbane.
