The Aboriginal Shire of Cherbourg is located in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Australia and is completely surrounded by the South Burnett Region. The shire includes the town of Cherbourg. The name Cherbourg comes from the original pastoral run name, which is believed to be a corruption of Chirbury, a town in Shropshire, England. In the 2006 census, the shire had a population of around 1,241 people, making it Queensland's third largest Aboriginal community. As of June 2018, the estimated population of Cherbourg was 1,315.
Cherbourg council area has a high prevalence of renting households, especially in the Health care and social assistance industry. The population skews towards younger age groups, with a majority earning lower incomes. Family households are primarily composed of Single Parents and Couples with Children.
