Mackay

Subtropical region produces the sweet stuff

Mackay, with its humid, subtropical climate, is known as the sugar capital of Australia because this region produces more than a third of the country’s sugar. The city, in the Mackay region on the eastern coast of Queensland, is about 970 kilometres north of Brisbane on the Pioneer River. Aside from sugar, Mackay also contributes to the economy via its mining industry, while its tourism, marine and retail sectors are also developing. There are a number of attractions in the area including the Bluewater Trail - 20 kilometres of pedestrian paths and bikeways, annual arts and river festivals, a city centre featuring art-deco inspired buildings and several islands and beaches. Two major highways connect Mackay to northern, southern and south-western townships, while there’s also a railway station and an airport servicing the town. It’s a convenient place to live with Mackay Base Hospital the main hospital for central Queensland, which has undergone upgrades. Those with young children have the choice of 11 primary schools, four high schools, as well as a number of private schools, university campuses and a TAFE.
