The Aboriginal Shire of Mapoon is located in Far North Queensland, Australia, on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Unlike most local government areas, Aboriginal Shires are often made up of multiple disjoint areas, each containing an Indigenous community. In the case of Mapoon, there are three areas within the locality, two to the north and south of the Wenlock River's mouth at the Gulf of Carpentaria, and a third further up the river.
Mapoon council area has a high rate of renting compared to outright ownership. The majority of households spend a reasonable portion of their income on rent. The area has a youthful demographic profile, with a substantial percentage under the age of 20.
