Mareeba Council
The Shire of Mareeba is a local government area located in Far North Queensland, inland from Cairns. It covers an area of 53,491 square kilometres and was established in 1879. In 2008, it amalgamated with other councils in the Atherton Tableland area to form the Tablelands Region. However, in 2013, Mareeba residents voted to reverse the amalgamation and re-establish Mareeba Shire, which officially occurred on 1 January 2014. The history of Mareeba dates back to the creation of the Woothakata Division in 1879, which was based in the mining town of Thornborough on the Hodgkinson goldfield.
Mareeba council area has a varied family structure, with childless couples, couples with children, and single parents making up a significant portion. The population skews towards older age groups, with over 40% above 50 years old. Affordable mortgage repayments are common, and the area's economy is driven by industries such as agriculture, construction, and real estate services.
