Pormpuraaw is a coastal town and locality in the Aboriginal Shire of Pormpuraaw, Queensland, Australia. It is situated on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula between Karumba and Weipa on the Edward River. The town is approximately 650 kilometers by road from Cairns. Pormpuraaw was formerly known as Edward River Aboriginal Mission, which was established in 1938. The community currently has a 4-man police station.
Pormpuraaw's economy is driven by agriculture, forestry, fishing, retail trade, and administrative services. The majority of residents rent their homes, with a significant portion spending less than 30% of income on rent. The population is predominantly young, with a mix of occupations ranging from community service workers to professionals.
