The Shire of Torres is located in Far North Queensland, Australia, covering large sections of the Torres Strait Islands and the northern tip of Cape York Peninsula. It is the northernmost Local Government Area in Australia and is the only one to abut an international border, being just 73 kilometers from Papua New Guinea. The area was originally known as the Hann Division before being separated to create Torres Division in 1885. It officially became the Shire of Torres on March 31, 1903, with the passage of the Local Authorities Act 1902. The Shire of Torres is administered from Thursday Island.

The area also has a high rental occupancy rate and a mix of industries, with construction and agriculture being prominent.
