Mount Gambier
This is “the jewel of the Limestone Coast"
Mount Gambier
"Geological wonders abound in Mount Gambier, the heart of the Limestone Coast and second largest town in South Australia," says the South Australian Tourism Commission.
Located in SA's south east corner with an urban population just under 30,000, it was established as a town in 1854.
The Bungandidj people who originally inhabited the area called the volcanic mountain berrin and it's peak ereng balam or egree belum, which is home of the eagle hawk. For the equally fascinating Umpherston Sinkhole in the middle of town they said thu-ghee.
In terms of schools, shops and services Mount Gambier has everything you could want or need whilst in town or on the land. It’s main economic sectors are services (such as government, education, tourism, and retail), primary production (mining, agriculture and forestry) and it’s also a major road transport hub for trucking.
A variety of sports are popular ,"aided by high-class facilities that draw competitors from far afield" says Tourism Mount Gambier.
There is also a rich arts culture, including Riddoch Art Gallery in the repurposed old town hall complex.
