Echuca
The border town of Echuca is a water sports mecca and a thriving tourism destination
One of several popular border towns in river country, Echuca has long been a destination for city folk seeking to escape to the Australian bush.
Situated on The Murray River, it’s neighbour is Moama, and this is prime paddle steamer territory. During holiday periods the population swells and in a normal year tourism, the major industry, draws $250 million to the local economy.
The scenery here might be familiar to many with the 1984 Australian television mini-series, All the Rivers Run, starring Sigrid Thornton and John Waters, filmed in and around the area.
Echuca is served by several primary schools including the newly constructed Twin Rivers Primary School (opened in 2018). Echuca has two high schools. Echuca College, a state secondary college and St. Joseph's, a Catholic co-ed secondary college. Moama Anglican Grammar School, just over the border in NSW also attracts students from Echuca. Bendigo TAFE has a campus in Echuca, offering education up to Diploma level in various fields.
According to 2016 Census Quickstats there are around 13,000 people living in Echuca with a reasonably even split of male (47.6%) and female (52.4%). The median age is 43.
