Sailors Gully
Not a sailor in sight but country air abounds
Sailors Gully
Like the land that time forgot, this sleepy area of greater Bendigo, population under 1000 folks, slumbers on undisturbed in the 21st century.
Only nine kilometres north-west of the city centre and immediately west of Eaglehawk, gold was discovered there in the first half of 1852.
It is thought that a sailor or sailors deserted their ships and set off for the gold diggings, giving rise to the area’s name.
The first school was opened in 1855 by the Church of England, but replaced by a government school 19 years later. This school is now named Eaglehawk North Primary School with a great reputation and increasing pupil numbers.
On Sailors Gully Road you can find many of the local public buildings, some still in use, while others have been remodelled into residential homes.
The New Moon Quartz mine site (1860) in Beelzebub Gully Road, off Growler Street, is heritage listed and includes above-ground structures built in the 1890s.
If you need a night out and a mingle with some local colourful characters, check out the Allies Hotel at the railway crossing.
