Soldiers Hill

The Ballarat suburb Soldiers Hill is an artistic hub that’s steeped in history

As Ballarat’s earliest planned suburb, Soldier’s Hill is a significant part of this regional city, with the entire suburb covered by a City of Ballarat Heritage Overlay. It was named in honour of the Colonial forces of Australia 40th Regiment, who were stationed here prior to the battle of the Eureka Rebellion and the Eureka Stockade. The first residential land sales took place in Soldiers Hill 1859 and plenty of period architecture from the Victorian era still peppers the streets. Nowadays however, the leafy suburb is just as noted for its arts scene, with the Soldiers Hill Artist Collective’s annual art walk encouraging people to stroll through the suburb and visit its open studios and galleries. The proximity to the CBD means walking and cycling are commonplace, the easiest ways to reach the local kindergarten, primary schools, parks, and any one of the funky cafes. Perfectly positioned for young families and active retirees, Soldier’s Hill is ideal for those who crave a vibrant lifestyle.
