It is located in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The Council covers an area of 254 square kilometres (98 sq mi) and had an estimated population of 263,554 as of the 2021 census, making it the fourth-most populous local government area in New South Wales. The traditional Aboriginal inhabitants of the land now known as the Northern Beaches belonged to the Dharug language group, including clans such as the Kayamaygal and the Birrabirragal. These clans lived around Sydney Harbour, from Manly to Pittwater, and were part of the Eora nation.
