WATCH: The official cash rate has been raised 25 basis points to 4.1 per cent in March 2026, marking the second consecutive monthly rise, driven by high inflation and rising energy prices due to Middle East conflict.

A generational home has sold at auction after being held by one family for 80 years.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house at 19 Glebe Road, The Junction, was listed with a guide of $2 million with Teresa Heighington of Ray White Newcastle Lake Macquarie.

The 569-square-metre property attracted interest from developers, local families and retirees.

Two bidders registered for the auction, including one on-site and one bidding over the phone from North Queensland who secured the property for $2.075 million.

"The bidding opened at $2 million, which pushed the other bidder out, so we then negotiated with the phone bidder," Ms Heighington said.

"There was a vendor bid of $2.050 million and the buyer then went up to $2.075 million.

"We were always guiding around $2 million and, to be honest, it was worth every cent."

According to Cotality, the median house value in The Junction is $2.17 million.

Ms Heighington said the buyer plans to retire into the home and keep the property mostly as is.

"She loves the home as it is and will do a few things to personalise it but, as far as the inside goes, she will keep most of the features and be happy to retire here and enjoy the lifestyle of The Junction," she said.

"We had a lot of interest from semi-retiree age groups who were looking to retire and not wanting a lot, but enough to enjoy and a decent-sized home in a good location."

The property was held by the Bruce family who had been in the house since 1946.

The owner, Byrdie Bruce, lived in the home until her 90s after raising six children there with her husband Peter.

"The family had the property for 80 years, so it was an emotional sale," she said.

"There were a couple of developers looking at it but the family were really keen to see it go to another person who wanted to keep it as a home, so they were very happy."

Due to the Easter long weekend, it was one of only 12 homes scheduled for auction across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie in the week ending April 5.

Auction activity will pick up again this week, with 21 homes currently set to go under the hammer.

Earlier in the week, a three-bedroom, one-bathroom weatherboard cottage on 413 square metres at 88 Woodstock Street, Mayfield, sold at auction with Toby Wilson of LaneCampos.

Only one bidder registered at the auction which opened at $865,000 and the property sold after negotiations for $900,000.

Cotality records show it was last sold in 2007 for $230,900.
